Paintless Dent Repair
Door dings, creases, and hail dents removed without touching your factory paint — most jobs finished within a day, every one backed by our Lifetime Written Warranty.
A door ding in a parking lot. A crease from a runaway shopping cart. A hood full of dents after one bad Austin hail night. None of these has to mean body filler, repainting, and days without your car. When the paint is still intact, paintless dent repair removes the dent itself and leaves your factory finish exactly as it left the factory.
Paintless dent repair — PDR — is what it sounds like. A technician works the dent out from behind the panel, using controlled pressure to massage the metal back to its original shape. No filler, no sanding, no paint. And because nothing gets refinished, there's nothing to cure — which is why most PDR jobs at Luxury Auto Body are finished within a day, and a few minor dings can take just a couple of hours.
Here's the honest part: PDR doesn't fix everything, and a shop that pushes it for every dent isn't doing you a favor. We inspect the damage for free and tell you plainly whether your dent is a PDR job or a job for traditional bodywork — both of which we do in-house at both shops, and both of which carry our Lifetime Written Warranty. Call (512) 986-7327 in Austin or (512) 572-5245 in Round Rock, or request a time online and our front desk will confirm it.
What Paintless Dent Repair Actually Is
Every panel on your car was stamped into shape at the factory, and a dent is that metal pushed out of shape — usually without the paint going with it. PDR reverses the dent the same way it happened: from the metal side, not the paint side. The technician gains access behind the panel, then works the dent out in small, deliberate passes, reading the surface until it sits true again. It is slow, precise handwork — closer to metal-shaping than to bodywork as most people picture it.
Why go to that trouble instead of just filling and repainting? Because your factory finish is worth preserving. Skilled refinishing can match it — we do that work every day with computerized color matching — but the best repaint is the one your car never needed. PDR keeps the original paint on the car, which means no blending into neighboring panels, no curing time, and no repainted area at all.
When PDR Works — and When It Doesn't
PDR has clear physical limits, and we'd rather tell you about them up front than after you've made a trip. The technique works when three things are true: the paint surface is intact, the metal isn't badly stretched, and the dent sits where a technician can work it from behind.
Where it falls short, traditional repair takes over — and that's not a consolation prize. Luxury Auto Body is a full collision and body shop, so the same building that does your PDR also does refinishing, bumper work, and structural repair when a dent turns out to be more than a dent.
One more boundary worth knowing: PDR is a metal-panel technique. Plastic bumper covers deform and scuff differently, and they get their own process — see our bumper repair page for how we handle those.
- Ideal for PDR: door dings, minor hail dents, and small creases where the paint is unbroken
- Not a PDR job: paint that's cracked, chipped, or scratched through — once the finish is broken, refinishing is required
- Not a PDR job: dents on a sharp body line or edge, where the metal folds rather than flexes
- Not a PDR job: metal stretched by a deep or violent impact — it won't return to shape under massage
- Not sure which you have? The inspection is free, and we'll tell you honestly which method your car needs
Cost and Speed: Why PDR Is Usually the Better Deal
PDR is typically less expensive than conventional dent repair, for a simple reason: it skips materials and stages entirely. No filler, no primer, no paint, no clear coat — and none of the labor hours that go with applying and finishing them. You're paying for a technician's skill and time, not a refinishing process.
What does it actually cost? That depends on the number, size, and location of the dents, which is why we won't pretend to quote your car sight unseen. What we will do is give you a free estimate so you know the exact price before any work begins — and if traditional repair turns out to be the right call, we'll explain why, not just hand you a bigger number.
Speed is the other half of the value. Paint work can't be rushed — drying and clear-coat curing take the time they take. PDR has no curing stage at all, which is why most jobs are done within a day, minor dings can be a couple of hours, and even larger hail jobs with many dents may take two to three days.
Door Dings, Creases, and Hail Damage
The everyday door ding is the classic PDR candidate: a shallow dent, paint intact, on an accessible panel. These are the jobs where PDR shines — quick turnaround, no repaint, and no evidence the ding ever happened. Small creases respond well too, provided the metal hasn't folded over a hard line.
Hail is PDR's biggest assignment in Texas. Hail typically leaves dozens or hundreds of small dents without breaking the paint — exactly the damage PDR was made for — so it's the preferred method for most hail repair, and it means your car keeps its factory finish even after a bad storm. Hail claims run through the comprehensive portion of your auto policy, and we work directly with your insurer on the claim. If your car took hail, our hail damage page walks through the whole process, including the claim, the timeline, and the deductible questions everyone asks.
Scratch Repair: When You Need Paint — and When You Don't
If you searched for scratch repair, here's the question that decides everything: did anything break through the paint? Run a fingernail across the mark. Some of what looks like a scratch is actually material transferred from whatever your car touched — paint or rubber sitting on top of your finish — and it's far less serious than it looks. A shallow mark that hasn't broken the surface is a much smaller job than a repaint.
A true scratch that cuts through the color is a different matter. No technique can massage paint back together — that panel needs refinishing, which we do in-house with computerized color matching, blended into the adjacent panels so the repair disappears. Our auto body paint and refinishing page covers exactly how that works.
And when a dent and a scratch arrive together — paint cracked at the bottom of the ding — PDR alone can't finish the job, because removing the dent still leaves broken paint behind. That's a combined repair, and it's routine for us. Send photos to start, or bring the car in: call (512) 986-7327 for Austin or (512) 572-5245 for Round Rock, or request a time and our front desk will confirm.
